You can play 3 different ancient Celtic board games from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales on this handmade game set; Ard Ri, Brandubh (Brannumh), and Gwyddbwyll / Fidchell (Fitchneal). These games are all variations of Tafl, which was introduced to the British Isles by the Vikings nearly 1000 years ago. (Although, there is some scholarly debate about the origins of Gwyddbwyll & Fidchell, which is discussed in the included instruction booklet.)
The the wooden game box is 10″x 10″. Engravings of Celtic knots mark the important spaces on the board. The inside of the box is lined with velvet and includes a velvet bag to keep the pieces secure.
The game pieces were cast from gypsum cement which has a stone-like feel. The “King” piece is a cast copy of an original sculpture that I carved by hand. The bottoms of the pieces are lined with felt to protect the game board.
What’s included: Game board/box, 25 playing pieces (16 pawns for one player, 8 pawns and 1 king for the other), and printed booklet with the history and instructions for 3 Celtic games that can be played with this board.
* WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD — Small parts.
Not intended for children under 3 yrs.
* Please be aware that due to the nature of the materials, and that each piece is made individually by hand, there may be some slight variation in color/grain/texture.
