Hnefatafl or “King’s Table” is a family of games played by the Norse people in ancient times. Evidence of tafl games dates back to around 400 AD which puts them among some of the oldest games we know about. Many variations of tafl games existed throughout Europe, as it was often enjoyed by the Vikings who brought board games with them to pass the time on their long journeys. This version with an 11×11 grid is also known as Copenhagen Hnefatafl to distinguish it from other versions.
The game board is engraved onto a 12″x12″ wooden box, engravings of ancient Norse symbols (valknut and triple horn) mark the important spaces on the board. The boarder is from an original ink drawing that I digitized then laser engraved onto the wood. The inside of the box is lined with velour and includes a velvet bag to hold the pieces secure while they’re inside. You may optionally add bronze feet to turn your game into an elegant display piece to feature on your shelf or coffee table.
The game pieces were cast from gypsum cement, a material that has been in use for thousands of years. They have a similar strength to concrete, a smooth stone-like feel, and a satisfying “clack” sound when they tap against each other. The bottoms of the pieces are lined with felt to protect the game board and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the board.
The “King” piece is a cast copy of an original sculpture that I carved by hand.
