Tablut is a variant Tafl family of games, similar to the Norse game “Hnefatafl.” However, unlike Hnefatafl, Tablut is played on a smaller 9×9 grid. (You can also find the 11×11 Hnefatafl version in this shop if you prefer.) The Tafl group are among the oldest known board games, first played by the Scandinavians, and believed to have been spread to other parts of Europe by the Vikings. Tablut is the version which we have the most complete historical record of how to play. It was found mainly in the northern regions of Finland.
The game board is engraved onto a 10″x 10″ wooden box, engravings of ancient Norse symbols (valknut and triple horn) mark the important spaces on the board. The inside of the box is lined with velour and includes a velvet bag to hold the pieces secure while they’re inside.
The “King” piece is a cast copy of an original sculpture that I carved by hand. The game pieces were cast from gypsum cement, a material that has been in use for thousands of years. They have a similar strength to concrete, a smooth stone-like feel, and a satisfying “clack” sound when they tap against each other. The bottoms of the pieces are lined with felt to protect the game board and allow the pieces to slide smoothly across the board.
* WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD — Small parts.
Not intended for children under 3 yrs.
* Please be aware that due to the nature of the materials, and that each piece is made individually by hand, there may be some slight variation in color/grain/texture.
