Handmade Hawaiian board game.

Availability: 1 in stock

Kōnane is an ancient game from Hawaiʻi.

Though it’s unknown exactly how old it is, it was already considered ancient by the Hawaiians at the time of King Kamehameha the Great. He was known as a champion Kōnane player, sometimes defeating his opponents in one move.

This game set has the game board engraved onto the top of a 10 inch wooden box. The inside of the velvet-lined box is large enough to store the game pieces and instructions. You may optionally add bronze feet to turn your game into an elegant display piece to feature on your shelf or coffee table.

The 1″ game pieces are castings of my own original carvings. The art style was  inspired by Polynesian art and motifs. The game pieces depict a dolphin, sea turtle, hibiscus clusters, and single hibiscus flower. They are made of gypsum cement which has a weighty feel and texture similar to stone. The bottom of each piece is lined with felt to protect the game board from scratches. The colors were chosen to represent the traditional materials of ancient Kōnane games – matte black for lava rock, and white to represent coral.

What’s included:

10 inch wooden game board/box, 64 handcrafted playing pieces (32 of each color), printed booklet with history and instructions for the game, and a drawstring bag to hold the pieces secure inside the box.

* WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD — Small parts.
Not intended for children under 3 yrs.

* Please be aware that due to the nature of the materials, and that each piece is made individually by hand, there may be some slight variation in color/grain/texture.
