This engraved game set includes instructions for Alquerque and several other historic games from around the world that can be played on an Alquerque board – from Mongolia to the Canary Islands. Some of the games included are Catch the Hare, Marelle Quadruple, Golden Swallows, Guettal, The Sümi Naga Game, and Tsukkalavde.
Alquerque dates back to around 1400 BC. Originally called Al-qirkat in the Middle East, it spread throughout the western hemisphere with Arab Speaking travelers and merchants. When the moors settled in Spain, they brought Al-qirkat with them. In the Spanish Language the game became known as Alquerque.
This game set is a wooden box with the game board engraved on the top of the box. The border on the game board is from one of my own original drawings – drawn by hand with pen and ink, then digitized, then laser engraved onto the board. There is space inside to hold all the pieces and the instructions. The inside of the box is lined with velvet.
The black and white game pieces are made from gypsum. Each game piece is a copy of an original piece that I made on a pottery wheel. They are hand cast with gypsum cement – a smooth plaster-like material that has a strength similar to concrete. This material has been in use for thousands of years.
What’s included: Game board/box, 24 playing pieces (12 for each player), and printed instruction book with the history and instructions for eleven different games.
Dimensions: The board measures 8 inches and is approximately 1.5 inches thick.
* WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD — Small parts.
Not intended for children under 3 yrs.
* Please be aware that due to the nature of the materials, and that each piece is made individually by hand, there may be some slight variation in color/grain/texture.
